Councillor Jayne Dunn is running to be the next Labour MP for Sheffield Central.
Discussing her difficult past growing up in a household with domestic abuse she said: “I know just what it’s like to hide under the bed with my sister.”
Coun Dunn first got into politics after her son studied it at university. He asked her to help him deliver leaflets in the community.
She said: “I realised people just wanted ordinary conversations with ordinary people.”
She was encouraged to run by a councillor and good friend of hers who frequented her beauty salon.
